India Set to Face China in Blockbuster Women’s Asian Champions Trophy Clash

Rajgir (Bihar), Nov 15: Defending champions India will face their sternest test of the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy when they take on China — the reigning Olympic silver medallists — in a high-stakes match on Saturday. Both teams are undefeated in the tournament so far, having won all their group-stage matches.

With three wins from as many games, China leads the points table, edging out India by a superior goal difference21 goals to India’s 18. This sets the stage for an exciting showdown as both sides seek to assert their dominance in the six-team round-robin tournament, where the top four teams will advance to the semifinals.

The match will be a chance for India to settle scores with China, who have triumphed in both of their most recent encounters in the 2023-24 FIH Pro League earlier this year, defeating India on both occasions.

India’s Form: A High Scoring Affair

India has been in superb form so far in the tournament, scoring 20 goals in their three matches. Their most impressive performance came in a 13-0 demolition of Thailand, where they played a near-perfect game across all departments.

The standout performance in India’s 13-0 win was from Deepika, who scored five goals, including two from direct dragflicks, highlighting India’s improved set-piece play. The Indian team converted five out of 12 penalty corners against Thailand, a much-needed improvement after struggling in this area in their earlier matches. Alongside Deepika, Preeti Dubey, Navneet Kaur, Lalremsiami, and Sangita Kumari also featured prominently in the forward line, contributing crucial goals.

The Indian midfield, captained by Salima Tete and Neha Goyal, controlled the flow of the game, while Sushila Chanu and Udita provided a solid defensive foundation. However, the defensive unit did not face significant challenges from Thailand, raising concerns about the level of preparation for a more competitive opponent like China.

The Challenge of China: Speed and Precision

As India prepares to face China, the Indian backline will have to be at its absolute best, especially considering China’s reputation for nimble footwork and their deadly counterattacks. The Chinese team, ranked No. 6 in the world, has scored 22 goals in their three matches, leading the tournament in goal-scoring. Their high-paced counterattacks will test India’s defensive setup, and the Indian defence will need to be sharp in transitioning the ball from the backline into the attack.

The Indian attack will also face a much tougher test against China than they did against Thailand, and India’s strikers will need to exercise patience and pick the right options inside the Chinese circle. Coach Harendra Singh has stressed the importance of maintaining the team’s structure in attack and defence, as it was against Thailand.

Harendra Singh’s Thoughts on the Upcoming Challenge

India’s head coach Harendra Singh expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance against Thailand, particularly in terms of maintaining structure and tactical discipline.

“I am happy with the way the team maintained their structure and managed to manipulate the opposition and score goals,” said Singh. “There was a strong connection between the defenders and attacking midfielders, and we need to continue that approach in the remaining matches,” he added, emphasizing the need for consistency as the competition heats up.

As India prepares for the Chinese challenge, the key will be to execute their game plan effectively while managing the pressure that comes with such a high-profile encounter.

Other Matches: Malaysia vs Japan, Korea vs Thailand

In other matches on Saturday, Malaysia will take on Japan, while Korea will face Thailand. Both matches promise to add more excitement to the competition as teams battle for a spot in the semifinals.

As the India vs China clash looms large, all eyes will be on the defending champions to see if they can overcome their recent defeats at the hands of China and continue their pursuit of another Asian Champions Trophy title.
