Congress Criticizes ‘One Nation, One Election’ Proposal

NEW DELHI, Sept 18: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has criticized the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative, labeling it as impractical. His comments come in response to a report from a high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, which was presented to the Union Cabinet on Wednesday.

Speaking at a press conference, Kharge argued that the BJP often introduces such proposals to divert public attention from pressing issues, especially as elections approach. “When elections come and they lack substantial issues to discuss, they create distractions like this,” he stated.

The ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal aims to synchronize elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, but Kharge remains skeptical about its feasibility. The committee submitted its report in March, ahead of the anticipated announcement for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

As the political landscape heats up, Kharge’s remarks underscore the ongoing debate surrounding electoral reform in India.
