New Delhi, September 6, 2024 – The Supreme Court of India today sought responses from Chanda Kochhar, former Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Bank, and her husband Deepak Kochhar in relation to a plea challenging a Bombay High Court decision that declared their arrest as “illegal.”
The Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Sanjay Kumar, issued notices to the Kochhars and requested their replies on the appeal filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This appeal contests the High Court’s February 6 ruling, which had deemed their arrest as unlawful. The ruling also affirmed a January 2023 interim order from a different bench that had granted bail to the Kochhars shortly after their arrest.
The Kochhars were detained by the CBI on December 23, 2022, in connection with the ongoing investigation into the Videocon-ICICI Bank loan case. The case centers around allegations of irregularities in a loan granted by ICICI Bank to the Videocon Group, and accusations of corruption involving the Kochhars.
The Supreme Court’s move to seek responses from the Kochhars marks a significant development in this high-profile case, reflecting the continued scrutiny and legal proceedings surrounding the allegations.
