Hyderabad, Aug 28 — Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi has been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Telangana in a bypoll. The announcement came after Singhvi was the sole candidate in the fray, following the rejection of an independent candidate’s nomination during scrutiny.
G Niranjan, Senior Vice President of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), received the certificate of election on behalf of Singhvi from the returning officer. Singhvi had filed his nomination on August 19, and with no other valid nominations, he was declared elected on Tuesday, the final day for withdrawal of candidatures.
Singhvi expressed his honor at being nominated as the party’s candidate for the Rajya Sabha bypoll in Telangana. The bypoll was necessitated by the resignation of K. Keshava Rao, who left the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to join the Congress.
Earlier this year, Singhvi faced a setback in the Rajya Sabha election from Congress-ruled Himachal Pradesh, where BJP nominee Harsh Mahajan won through a draw of lots after both candidates received 34 votes each.
